It's been said that observing a troop of baboons in the wild is often much more interesting than watching a pride of lions. As impressive as the cats and all of the 'Big 5' animals are in Africa, often it's the primates, big and small, that people find the most fascinating - including baboons, chimpanzees, gorillas, and the many species of 'Old World' monkeys that inhabit continental Africa and islands off the coast.
There is perhaps no greater thrill than spending an hour nestled down among a family of gorillas. We will discuss the differences in cost, access, and experience with the Mountain Gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda vs. the Western Lowland Gorillas in the Republic of Congo (not to be confused with the much more heard about Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
We will also go in search of monkeys like the Colobus, Moustached, Putty-Nosed, and Black-Faced Vervet, as well as Olive, Yellow, and Chacma Baboons in countries like South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and the Republic of Congo. Options for spending time with Chimpanzees will be explored and we will stop in Madagascar for a few ways to see ring-tailed and other lemurs. Mangabeys and mandrills will be mentioned too!
