Botswana’s Okavango Delta
The River which never finds the Sea
One of the world's largest expanses of sand, Africa's Kalahari Desert, ironically supports an amazing water wonderland. Nothing like the Okavango Delta of northern Botswana exists anywhere else on the planet. Rain in the highlands of Angola travels over 600 miles through a narrow panhandle before fanning out into a vast inland delta of lush lagoons, artistic channels, and palm islands. Described as “the river that never finds the sea," this annual flood arrives during Botswana's dry season just when it is needed the most, thus sustaining a diversity of life that includes Africa's most extraordinary plants and animals. Over forty percent of Botswana's unique habitat is being conserved through the country's low volume, high quality tourism approach. Learn how to best access the pristine areas of the Okavango region. An overview of safari options and activities available to travelers today will be presented by Erica Varga who in the 1990s led people from around the globe on overland safaris across Botswana and into Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. We will discuss community development and conservation efforts as related to the safari industry.
Your guide for today’s safari program, Erica Varga, has traveled extensively throughout 10 countries in East and Southern Africa over the past 20 years. She has led guests from around the globe on overland safaris across Botswana and into Zambia and Zimbabwe and worked as an Assistant Anthropologist.
Erica has a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and an M.A. from the University of Washington in Museology, which is Museum Studies. She is a specialist in the field of heritage preservation and has worked as an executive director, curator, and consultant for various museums and professional organizations. Additionally, Erica has developed and taught graduate level courses at the University of Washington. She currently owns and operates Acappella Safaris.

Bali--Pearl of Indonesia
Made famous by its starring role in Eat, Pray, Love, Bali is truly a remarkable destination. It is a tropical paradise with a fascinating history and a unique culture whose Hindu heritage has been preserved in daily life. Magnificent beaches offer incredible opportunities for rest and relaxation. Bali is an adventurer’s paradise as well, with world class diving, snorkeling and surfing. Hike up an active volcano for sunrise or bike through rural villages that time forgot. If you’re brave, travel to a nearby island and meet giant Komodo Dragons in their natural habitat. Or if you don’t want nightmares, visit handicraft villages where you can learn about traditional woodcarving or Batik dying techniques (and shop to your heart’s content). Witness Balinese Fire Dancers and the strange and mystical Kecak “Ramayana Monkey” chant. We’ll also take a few side-trips from Bali, to the Gili Islands near Lombok and to Borobudur, the 9th century Buddhist monument in Central Java. A trip to Bali is something you will always remember!

According to Nicoletta, the best way to fully enjoy Italy is to visit the small places, and discover firsthand how wine, foods and dialects change in sound and taste every 25 km.

Nicolletta will show you an overview of beautiful new areas to discover and highlight the ones you might be familiar with. A blitz of favorite regions to travel to, a fun way to build your itinerary before your trip ….and all your questions answered. She will serve some tasty rosemary focaccia, an old recipe from her family.

Nepal
Though one of the smallest countries in the world, Nepal boasts the highest mountain and the deepest valley, as well as an astonishing array of animal and plant life. The extreme variations in altitude have created a wide range of environments, from lush, steamy jungles and subtropical grassland savannas to barren, freezing mountain peaks. Nepal’s varied geography has also contributed to a high level of ethnic and religious diversity.
Chris Mackay, Co-founder and Executive director of Crooked Trails will explore many of the country’s beautiful landscapes, as well as different ethnic communities through homestays and visits. We will visit many of Nepal’s top sights, including the most famous Buddhist and Hindu temples in Kathmandu. At Royal Chitwan, the country’s first national park, we will ride elephants through the jungle as we go on safari in search of the park’s diverse wildlife, which includes the famous white rhino and the seldom-seen Bengal tiger, as well as crocodiles and hundreds of species of birds. Join Chris for an informative presentation.
